About Us

Founded in 2006 by Kristine Snodgrass and her creative writing students, Cake: A Journal of Poetry and Art began as a platform to showcase the writing talents of students at Florida Agricultural and Mechanical University (FAMU) alongside renowned writers like Amiri Baraka. In 2021, the journal evolved into Cake: A Literary Journal to better reflect the diverse range of work featured in each issue, which now includes fiction and creative nonfiction, in addition to poetry and art. It was also the first time that Cake was published in its online format, with limited print. This new format prompted us to renew the issue at #1. In 2022, Cake was registered as an official student organization at FAMU, shifting full editorship to the student volunteers who have given their dedication to the publishing of the journal. Since then, through the direction of Xochitl Yanelis, Cake has expanded its members and endeavors, including Cake: The Podcast, organized open mic nights on campus. We are still evolving and trying out new ideas. Cake has provided invaluable editorial experience to its student editors, many of whom have gone on to careers in publishing, editing, and graduate programs.
