The following collection of poems is a result of the creative exploration undertaken by students in the 2023 Write Your Way Up! Summer Camp at Florida A&M University which was facilitated by the faculty and staff of the Department of English and Modern Languages. Under the guidance of Kristine Snodgrass, students delved into the rich history preserved in the Black Archives. Inspired by the artifacts and stories they encountered, these young writers translated their reflections into powerful, thought-provoking poetry. Their work not only speaks to the past but also echoes their personal interpretations of history, identity, and heritage.
The Chair
It's a chair that Doctors used back then, I describe this chair as a rusty and leather chair that has straps, but is laidback. They use this chair to help patients’ needs, and in the background of the chair there is a picture of a Doctor holding two babies – the Doctor, Dr. Brickler who was the Doctor that delivered me when I was born.
Pain, Hurt, Frustration
The chair is rusty and laidback.
"Perfection is a disease of a nation"
Heartbreak
The chair is leather with straps.
There will come a time where it will go by.
But remember the heart will still break.

[Red]
there's something coming at
me,
red is running towards me.
Holding someone in my arms I
have to protect
all I see is red
Tired of running from home to
home
red still follows me
you can see the painful look in
my face,
Red in my eyes
tho I will not let red overcome
me.
Red is so bright, and bold
stain like cool aid on a summer
breeze
red is like my remedy.

Jukebox
1965
You are still not accepted.
So, alongside many, you turn to music.
Music is your escape,
From all the dreadful things that surround you day-by-day.
The angst, the pain
I can almost hear and feel the vulnerability and every emotion,
Each time you insert half $1 and press a button.
You understand that music understands.
It helps you understand that when
You want to let go
You are not alone
Music is your therapy.
Wiping your tears when you are sad,
Comforting you and giving you hope
When you feel like all is lost.
Music is your escape; I am your escape. I am a juke box.

[Hand-Made Rocking Chair]
I wonder how old this thing is, is it older than me or older than the trees my ancestors were hung on did we build it for us or were we forced by the white man were we even allowed to look at it without getting ending up on a tree or hanging by our two arms getting beat senseless was this chair for our good or our bad…

[Drums]
The silence forced was beyond deafening,
But the heart and truth their voices held was worth defending.
By resilience the silence was broken,
Through golden drums secrets were told, though unspoken.
As a way to escape bounds,
Slaves found a solution, a solution by sound.
For them it provided a rhythmic voice,
A secret outlook, of which they rejoiced.
For the bonds of slavery could not hold,
The hearts of a people, from young to old.
So at every ceremony they will sing,
Expressing the power of a drum, tied by string.

For Justice
Marching down the street
Screaming
Hoping for peace
For justice
As we stand in front of the police
It’s just us
Screaming
hand in hand
We stand
Proud
Against the force
That seeks to tear us down
They treat us like clowns
But we’ve put all jokes aside
No laughs out loud
Screaming
All we want is justice
But they don’t seem to care
They just
Stand there
Silently
As we march
It’s just us
Screaming
Screaming
Screaming
From winded lungs
From broken hearts
For justice.

[Cleats]
As his cleats struck the ground
It was nothing less than profound
Bronze cladding his mighty feet
An athlete, a vision of strength complete
With each stride, he defied gravity’s hold
His spirit aflame, fearless and bold
Bronze cleats, a testament to his might
Igniting the field, a beacon of light

In the Game
There’s this game called basketball
And my haters wanna see me fall
Because they think I’m just tall
But I got game what about y’all
I step on the court ready to play
Got no worries just focused on the game
When I’m balling I give the other team pain
Not much you can do when I get to the paint
Always locked in when it’s game time
In the gym everyday on my grind
Always working hard never satisfied
Keep working hard never get tired
I gotta give everything I got
No matter what time it is or not
Every minute I fought
But I did my best and helped a lot

Cutlass
The mythical sword of soldiers
In war and revolution
A sword of insane properties,
Lt. Col. Samuel Washington used as a solution
In war, in life, a tool on the cutting edge
When you are dull, I will refine you
Piercing, keen senses, cutting through
You are a sharp cutlass.

Earth Defender
There is blood in the earth
There’s a sting to the sand
There are hidden truths
that man and ghost alike should fear
so if you cannot show me respect
then fear will suffice
Watch me curl and sharpen
into something great and towering,
not just the mother of life
but the defender of it

[Queen]
.I am Queen
. I am a leader.
Yellow means loyal
Loyalty are warriors.
I am Queen.
We are calm when war comes along.
But we thrive
to protect our home. I am Queen

The Weight Holding You Down
Why are we still punished
Don’t crack under pressure don’t allow the weight to let you drown
My swollen ankle tied up by a ball and chain it’s a rusty brown
The justice system is corrupt it’s the way society is set up
The truth is that things have gotten better but not change
The thought of institutional injustice is insane
It’s the first of the month I can’t pay so I’m in pain
So people like us gotta make a way
We do this this way and this that way I feel lil but I’m not a baby
I preaching a message it’s problem with the whole way of life it can’t change overnight
1954 so we started here we can make something out of nothing so we can make it somewhere.
As we get held back by the weight and shackles of society.
So don’t let weight hold you down.

The Game
Football’s very entertaining
With names we all know
like Reggie Bush, Tebow, Lamar Jackson
Tom Brady, and Joe Burrow
The helmets, the scoreboard
the cleats, the pads
A lot of equipment
that you wish you had
Football is very dangerous
It’s played on a field, not a court
But no matter where it is
football is always my favorite sport!
